The meter-based surge protection device is the first layer of protection for your motor-driven appliances from transient high-voltage surges that enter through the meter. Some examples are the air conditioner, washer, dryer, refrigerator, stove, and garbage disposal. The manufacturer (Meter Treater) provides warranty coverage and processes the warranty claims. Will the Surge MitiGator™ protect my home from a direct lightning strike? Unfortunately, there is nothing on the market that can protect your home from a direct lightning strike. How should I protect my computer and other sensitive electronics? In addition to the meter-based surge protection device, SECO Energy recommends a layered approach by installing point-of-use devices for sensitive electronics and sensitive components of large appliances. Point-of-use devices can be purchased at local home improvement stores, hardware stores, or from online retailers at reasonable prices. Protection strength and warranties vary, so be sure to read the packaging. Do I have to be home for installation of the Surge MitiGator™ at my electric meter? Installation of the Surge MitiGator™ does not require an appointment. If no one is home, the installation will be completed. Is there a warranty if damage occurs as a result of a surge? The manufacturer of the meter-based surge protection device is Meter Treater. They provide a warranty of $5,000 per appliance, per occurrence, with a lifetime maximum of $500,000. Please reach out to Meter Treater directly for warranty claims. Most of the surge protection devices have a clear window slightly larger than the size of a quarter with two lights displayed, while some have a clear window slightly larger than the size of a dime that displays one light. The surge protection device is operational when the red light(s) appear. Contact SECO as soon as possible if a light is out. We will replace the surge protection device at no cost during the 15-year warranty period. What is not covered by SECO Energy’s Surge MitiGator™? The meter-based surge protection device warranty excludes damage from direct lightning strikes, sustained over-voltages, and brownout conditions which exceed the device's specified protection ratings. Sensitive electronic equipment including computers, televisions, gaming systems, and security systems is excluded from coverage as they remain vulnerable to reduced surge levels safe for motor-driven appliances. Point-of-use surge protectors are recommended for these sensitive items to provide the additional protection they require. Coverage does not extend to detached structures, water system equipment, irrigation systems, on-site power generation systems (solar, wind, generators), electric vehicles and charging equipment, or medical devices. The warranty also excludes structural damage, electrical system components such as wiring and panels, and consequential losses including spoiled food or lost data.Please refer to the complete warranty document for detailed terms and conditions. Is there a difference in the warranty if I purchase or lease? The manufacturer’s warranty is the same regardless of whether you choose to purchase or lease the product. Will the Surge MitiGator™ keep my clocks from blinking? The Surge MitiGator™ is not a source of energy and will not prevent clocks from blinking after an outage. Can I get a discount on my homeowners insurance? SECO recommends you check with your insurance carrier if our Surge MitiGator™ protection would provide a benefit to your premium. What is the cost for the Surge MitiGator™ from SECO Energy? The Surge MitiGator™ program is available for a lease of $5.95 per month, plus tax, with a $40.00 installation fee. You also have the option to purchase for $349.00 plus tax with no installation cost. Both options are conveniently added to your electric bill after the device has been installed. Surge MitiGator Terms of Service The Surge MitiGator is installed behind the meter and is designed to stop transient, high-voltage surges before they enter the home. The manufacturer offers a 15-year warranty for damage if the surge protection device fails to provide protection. The warranty covers the non-electronic components of residential, motor-driven appliances, such as refrigerator, stove, washer, dryer, HVAC unit, garbage disposal, and so on. Point-of-use suppressors are recommended for all sensitive electronic items and electronic components of motor-driven appliances that normally plug into 120-volt outlets. Though sensitive electronics are not covered under the warranty, point-of-use suppressors will provide a layer of protection and possibly warranty coverage through their manufacturer.
