Restaurant shooting in Carroll County leaves two wounded as suspect arrested at scene Eldersburg, MD — A late-night altercation outside a restaurant escalated into gunfire, leaving two men injured and a suspect in custody within minutes, according to Maryland State Police. The shooting occurred around 9:30 p.m. Friday at a restaurant in the unit block of Liberty Road. Troopers arriving at the scene found two victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Authorities identified the victims as 60-year-old Brooks Sandoval of Hampstead and 50-year-old David Hopwood of Sykesville. Both were transported to a trauma center for treatment. Police said the suspect, 52-year-old Matthew Tyler Hanks of Sykesville, was located outside the restaurant and taken into custody without incident. Investigators said the shooting happened in the rear of the restaurant following an altercation between the three men, who were known to each other. A handgun believed to have been used in the incident was recovered. Hanks has been charged with two counts of first-degree assault and related offenses. He was transported to the Carroll County Detention Center. Authorities said there is no ongoing threat to the public as the investigation continues.
