News Release Date 02-03-2026 Back to News City Issues Proclamation Honoring Black History Month 2026 St. Augustine Beach, Florida — February 3, 2026 — The City of St. Augustine Beach has officially proclaimed February 2026 as Black History Month, recognizing the enduring contributions of African Americans to the nation’s history and honoring the city’s own pivotal role in the Civil Rights Movement. The proclamation aligns with the national 2026 Black History Month theme, “A Century of Black History Commemorations,” marking 100 years since the first national Black History Week was established. The theme invites reflection not only on Black history itself, but on the evolving recognition, remembrance, and teaching of that history across generations. The proclamation highlights the lasting contributions of Black leaders, innovators, educators, artists, and civil rights pioneers, whose achievements have shaped communities locally and nationwide. It also emphasizes the importance of continuing to educate future generations about the struggles, triumphs, and resilience of Black Americans. “This proclamation formally recognizes the lasting impact of African Americans on our community and the nation,” said Mayor Beth Sweeny. “The wade-in protests at St. Augustine Beach in June 1964 helped bring national attention to segregation and played a direct role in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Honoring that history is an important part of who we are as a city.” The proclamation was issued this 2nd of February 2026 and stands as a formal declaration of the City’s commitment to honoring Black history.
