Swale Maintenance Compliance Program Update Apr 22, 2026 The Village of Key Biscayne is moving forward with a Swale Maintenance Compliance Program to support safer, more consistent, and well-maintained swales throughout the community. Swales, the landscaped areas between the street and private property, play an important role in drainage, visibility, and pedestrian access. Over time, a variety of materials and uses have made some swales less effective and, in some cases, created safety and accessibility concerns. The program brings together Code Compliance, Public Works, and Police to improve conditions through a coordinated, village-wide effort. Key areas of focus include maintaining clear zones along the street edge, preserving visibility at intersections and driveways, keeping sidewalks accessible, and supporting proper drainage. During May 2026, residents may receive courtesy notices identifying areas that need attention, along with guidance on how to address them. Village staff is available to answer questions and provide assistance. Formal enforcement will begin on June 1, 2026, for properties that remain non-compliant. Property owners are responsible for maintaining the swale adjacent to their property. Keeping swales clear and properly maintained helps support safe streets, effective drainage, and the overall appearance of the community.
