Subject: Put the Phone Away or Pay Campaign 2026 Date: 04/16/2026 Location: Madison County FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEDATE: April 15, 2026CONTACT: Sheriff Todd Volk Successful “Put the Phone Away or Pay” Enforcement Campaign Madison County, Nebraska — The Madison County Sheriff’s Office participated in the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) “Put the Phone Away or Pay” enforcement campaign, conducted from April 9 through April 13, 2026. During the five-day enforcement period, deputies made a total of 50 traffic contacts, resulting in: 10 citations issued 1 DUI arrest, which escalated to a felony arrest for assault on a law enforcement officer 1 Minor in Possession of Alcohol citation 7 speeding citations 1 reckless driving citation This campaign, which coincided with the Easter holiday travel period, focused on a combination of increased enforcement and a zero-tolerance approach, along with strong public education efforts emphasizing the dangers of distracted driving. “Deputies stepped up during their shifts and made an extra effort during this campaign,” said Sheriff Todd Volk. “These efforts will continue to reduce distracted driving and educate the public on the importance of staying focused behind the wheel.” The Madison County Sheriff’s Office will continue proactive enforcement efforts and will partner with NHTSA again for the upcoming “Make it Click” campaign during the Memorial Day holiday period.
